honey barbecue air fried salmon

Barbecue in the summer is just a whole MOOD. I’m so excited to finally share this sweet/savory crispy air fried (or baked) salmon recipe!

Healthy Glazed Wild-caught Salmon

I could honestly go for salmon every single day so this quick & easy dinner is very quickly becoming one of my favorites! There’s just something about the blend of sweet & savory from this healthy and delicious glaze that takes it to a whole other level.

I like to buy wild-caught salmon for the extra nutrient punch. Wild-caught salmon has a higher omega-3 fatty acid content and a higher essential vitamin & mineral content too! I highly recommend this article for a good summary about the differences between wild-caught and farm-raised fish.

My favorite budget-friendly way to sneak wild caught fish into my diet is buying canned salmon and tuna! Two of my favorite recipes to make with wild-caught canned seafood are linked below:

  • Mediterranean tuna cakes
  • Thai tuna burgers

The tuna in both of the recipes above can easily be replaced with canned salmon!

I love topping this salmon dish with fresh avocado, roasted walnuts, and some dried parsley for some extra flavor. This salmon also pairs perfectly with my favorite garlic tomato cauliflower rice!

Why I Use Zero-Sugar Barbecue Sauce

On the specific carbohydrate diet, most sugar sources- with the exception of honey- are considered “illegal”. The word “illegal” sounds so harsh, but it’s true!

There’s almost nothing worse than an unexpected IBD flare…

Most sugar sources that are traditionally in barbecue sauces are known to feed the “bad bacteria” in people suffering from ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s Disease. These typically include brown sugar, high fructose corn syrup, or fructose.

If you’re a science nerd like I am, I highly recommend checking out these articles!

  • Fructose & it’s Impact on Our Bodies
  • NCBI Research Publication on Fructose Effects on the Microbiome

Since I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, its become very important to me to either make my own barbecue sauce with honey OR buy a zero-sugar barbecue sauce that doesn’t hurt my stomach!

How to Make Air Fried Salmon

Step 1: Combine the barbecue sauce & honey in a small dish. Combine the sea salt, paprika, cumin, & onion powder together in a separate small dish.

Step 2: Pat the salmon lightly with a paper towel and rub with the spice blend. Then pour the honey barbecue mixture over the side of the salmon with the spice rub on it.

Step 3: Air fry at 360F for 12 minutes.

How to Make Garlic Tomato Cauliflower Rice

Step 1: In a non-stick skillet, drizzle about 1/2 tbsp olive oil and turn the stovetop heat on to medium.

Step 2: Throw in the minced garlic, onion, and tomatoes & cook until the onions are slightly caramelized and translucent.

Step 3: Add in the frozen cauliflower rice and dried parsley. Cover, and cook for about 5 minutes or until the cauliflower is tender!

Pair with the salmon and enjoy!

Description

A sweet & savory glazed salmon recipe! The most perfect quick & healthy dinner made in the air fryer or oven.

Ingredients

Scale

Air Fried Salmon:

  • 5 6oz. wild-caught skin-on salmon fillets
  • 1 cup zero-sugar barbecue sauce
  • 5 tsp. honey
  • 1/2 tsp. paprika
  • 1/2 tsp. cumin
  • 1/2 tsp. onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt

Garlic Tomato Cauliflower Rice:

  • 5 cups frozen cauliflower rice
  • 1 1/2 tsp. minced garlic
  • 3 tbsp diced white onion
  • 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes
  • 1 tsp. dried parsley

Instructions

  1. Combine the honey and barbecue sauce in a small dish. In a separate small dish, whisk together the paprika, sea salt, cumin, & onion powder.
  2. Pat the salmon fillets lightly with a paper towel & rub on the spice mixture to the side of the fillet without the skin.
  3. Pour the honey barbecue mixture over the side of the salmon with the spice rub & spread evenly.
  4. Air fry the salmon for 12 minutes at 360F.

For the Cauliflower Rice:

  1. Heat a nonstick pan over medium heat. Drizzle with about 1 tbsp. olive oil.
  2. Add in the minced garlic, white onion, and tomatoes. Cook for about 5 minutes or until the onions are slightly caramelized and translucent.
  3. Add in the cauliflower rice and dried parsley.
  4. Cover the pan and cook for another 5 minutes until the cauliflower rice is heated through and tender.

Notes

To bake the salmon in the oven, cook at 450F for 12 minutes. Then broil for 2-3 minutes to caramelize the barbecue glaze.
